Dear CMSC Community,

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion (CMSC)? Our small but dedicated team works each day to support a global community of teachers, course participants, and those in the world looking to practice self-compassion—all with the shared mission of alleviating human suffering and improving the collective well-being of the planet through the practice of self-compassion.

Here’s how we show up each day:

Working to Nurture Our MSC Teachers – Our team provides training, mentorship, and ongoing resources to ensure teachers feel supported in bringing MSC to their communities.

Creating Transformative Learning Spaces – From coordinating courses to offering free Circles of Practice, we design meaningful experiences for participants to deepen their self-compassion practice.

Reaching a Global Audience – Whether through partnerships, social media, or outreach efforts, we’re always working to make self-compassion accessible to people from all walks of life.

Expanding MSC Programs & Resources – We develop new courses, workshops, and retreats, ensuring MSC continues to evolve and meet the needs of our growing community.

Building Connection & Support – Whether responding to participant inquiries, guiding teachers through training, or fostering conversations on self-compassion, we’re here to listen, uplift, and empower.

Long-term effectiveness of the Mindful Self-Compassion program compared to a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction intervention: a quasi-randomized controlled trial involving regular mindfulness practice for 1 year

In recent years, mindfulness-based interventions have gained prominence as effective strategies for enhancing psychological well-being. Among these, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) programs have been extensively studied for their benefits in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. While both programs share foundational mindfulness principles, MSC uniquely emphasizes the cultivation of self-compassion, aiming to foster a kinder and more understanding relationship with oneself.​

This recent study aims to compare the long-term effectiveness of the MSC program with the MBSR intervention over a one-year period. By employing a quasi-randomized controlled trial design, the research investigates how regular mindfulness practice influences psychological outcomes in participants engaged in either program. The findings seek to inform practitioners and individuals about the sustained impacts of these interventions, contributing to the optimization of mindfulness-based approaches for long-term mental health benefits.

Meet Kelin Welborn – Weaving Self-Compassion into Life & Leadership

As a parent and as the Strategic Brand Director at the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion (CMSC), I know firsthand the power of self-compassion in both personal and professional life.

There was a time when self-doubt and the pressures of parenting felt overwhelming. Like many, I was my own harshest critic— starting my work here two years ago and my practice of Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) has been life changing. Learning to pause, offer kindness to myself, and recognize shared humanity transformed not just how I parent, but how I approach leadership, creativity, and connection in my work.

I work to bring that same ethos to CMSC, shaping how self-compassion reaches people worldwide. Through storytelling, community engagement, and thoughtful brand strategy, I hope to help others find the resources and support they need to cultivate self-kindness in their own lives.
